Monthly Diary – November 2018

I went to the NBA Agrifest in Exeter with a Charolais Bull at the beginning of the month – but was beaten by a Limousin !  This annual event was fairly well supported but I think a bi-annual one would be better in the long run.  This is a busy time of year for everyone.

I took three bulls to Brecon – came away with Reserve Champion – Killerton Neville -but sadly did not sell him.  Sold two other bulls but it was hard trade and not a lot of buyers.

Younger cattle and cows with young calves at foot are now being housed because weather conditions have changed.  We are feeding with a Keenan feeder trying to use as much of our quality home produced grass/maize silage as possible and very little extra added concentrate.   I had the grass and maize silage analysed and was very pleased with the results.

Dry cows and some cows with calves are out on stubble turnips due to river meadows being under water – so winter work is well upon us.

Hoping calving will finish early December to give us a break until February

Happy Christmas everyone
