I had to visit Carlisle Bull Sale again at the beginning of the month to buy a replacement stock bull and came away with the reserve junior champion Confluence Leyton. I hope we have better luck with this stylish youngster – he is younger than I would have normally purchased. He has a lovely temperament and has just gone out with some heifers at the end of the month.
I sold two young bulls at McCartneys / Brecon Sale this month. A difficult trade for younger animals but older bulls were in demand.
Devon County Show was our first outing for 2016 with two heifers and two junior bulls. Killerton Jarvis won her class, Killerton Jinks placed second. The two bulls were also placed 2nd in their respective classes. There were less entries this year due to costs and TB – it is not the only show that is struggling to fill all its stalls.
There seems to be slightly more demand for bulls on farm / private sales which is welcomed. We will probably end up taking some to the Exeter Limousin sale on Friday 24th June.
Silage was cut during the last couple days of May with glorious conditions and hopefully the quality will be very good. I shall await analysis.
Cereal crops have picked up this month after a very slow start – the warm sunny weather is making everything look good and is charging ahead.
