Monthly Diary – July 2021

Cattle in High Water

July started with Devon County Show but I didn’t attend with livestock this year, only in person.   Cattle numbers were well down.  Congratulations to Thor Atkinson for making the journey from Cumbria and winning the Limousin Breed Champion.

Winter barley was cut in a very hot week, moisture down to 12% and yields about average. The Rape was cut in the hot weather – our first dabble at growing it, I was pleased with the yield.    Oats are next on the list.    The straw was baled before the rain and stacked for winter use, nice and dry.

Grass seeds and stubble turnips were put in after the barley – the subsequent weather helped it have a good take.

I took cattle to Mid Devon Show – Garnedd Neptune and Killerton Ray.  Prizes were won in the individual and pair classes.   The show was well attended by the local population – everyone seemed glad to have a day out in the countryside.
