April has been a very busy month . We have been busy calving, taking animals to sales and getting ground ready for maize after over wintering stubble turnips, fertilizer applied to grass and cereal crops plus spraying.
Calving has been going reasonably well. The only problem incurred was cryptosporidium. Most calves have got over it but sadly we lost one. With improved weather conditions the problem will hopefully be overcome but we are resting the field from newly born calves for 12 months.
I took the decision to sell the charolais females and they were sold at Exeter Market – not too badly.
I then took 3 limousin bulls to Frome Market for the first time and met a steady trade with all three being sold.
The next sale was the SW Limousin Club sale at Holsworthy which we took two younger bulls to and sold one. Also took heifers which proved to be harder work but managed to sell most.
The next sale is Brecon on May 11th at which I will be taking three bulls. Let’s hope for a stronger trade.
I have made front page of a local magazine Exeter Living – to promote Devon County Show. The article features some lovely photos and verbatim report of our uncensored chat!
