Monthly Diary – October 2020

After a wet start to the month I held my nerve and kept the cattle out even though there was slight poaching in the fields but the calves remained healthy.  Started supplementary feeding  but everything stayed healthy.   Calving still going on with a run of bull calves – so far so good.

I went to Carlisle bull sale mid October and got a little carried away, purchasing a new bull MARAISCOTE PEDRO , whose breeding is completely different to what we already have.  A very shapely, quiet bull with a double F94L gene.  He has settled in well and will hopefully be tried with a few next month.

After the sale I drove further north to a ‘study tour’ on North Uist – ornithology…   This was a most enjoyable trip and I am glad I took the time given the current Covid-19 situation.

The search for a new Stockperson continues – several applicants but many without sufficient experience.   Encouraging to see a number of young people interested in agricultural work but at this time I am not looking for a trainee.

Looking forward to the Brecon Limousin sale in November and I hope it goes ahead.  I will be taking three of the best young bulls that I have bred.
