Monthly Diary – May 2021

Summer grazing at Columbjohn, Killerton

Summer grazing at Columbjohn, Killerton

April finished very cold without any grass growth then May followed with very wet weather, to say the least.  The river has been flooded several times making it inaccessible to be able to check cattle every day and poaching has been an issue.  Due to a lack of accommodation most cattle had to stay out and be fed supplementary feed.

On the bright side re the bulls sales I attended – the trade has been stronger than usual, or back where they ought to be with all the work involved.  Brecon Sale (McCartneys) had a bull average sale price of around £5000+ which was good.  At our local SW Limousin Club sale at Holsworthy I sold two bulls for 4000gns. which is an improvement on previous years.  I wish the new owners all the best with their purchasers.  A report of the Holsworthy sale can be found on the British Limousin website: https://limousin.co.uk/2021/05/holsworthy-sale-report/

Beef prices are coming back which is a shame – I can’t see any real reason for it as other meats remain strong.

Silage has been delayed due to the weather and ground conditions – we hope to do first cut early June.
