May has come and gone in a flash, even without Sales and Shows to accommodate. The car mileage has stayed very low, we have hardly left the premises even though a lot of people have been using the bridleways/footpaths/cycle ways. The very fine weather has brought them out in their droves. Silage was brought forward a week due to the grass disappearing in front of our eyes.
The size of the pit is 35% smaller than it should be for a similar area in previous years. We really need rain soon as there has been no grass growth, particularly after silage. Saying that, the cattle are looking well and a little bit of supplementary feeding has commenced. The cereal crops are looking quite stressed now, especially on the light ground.Straw is very short. The plus side is that the maize has come through and is still growing well. A few bulls have gone privately to new homes. We have tried on line sales which have proved unsuccessful at this present moment.
Hopefully June will make life easier and pedigree markets can return to semi-normality. The beef markets have improved – climbing each week as we speak.Long may it continue… The Stock Bulls have gone out with the girls – fingers crossed they are all working well.
