Monthly Diary – January 2014

As the shoot season draws to a close it is time to get back to the farm and catch up with ‘jobs’ put on hold …  The month has been very wet in Devon but compared to the Somerset Level floods we have been let off lightly.

The cattle outwintered on stubble turnips look well – but welcome additional feed of straw/grass silage.

We are taking four bulls to the first sale at Brecon (McCartneys) on 22nd February – Killerton Hillbilly, HoHoHo, HoleinOne, and Honnie.

It’s a shame the beef price is dropping off and the abattoirs are becoming more difficult due to surplus supplies coming in from abroad (allegedly).

We have just started calving with a few born in January.  My show heifer Killerton Gucci has just had a bull calf and is looking well.  Other heifers have also calved without any problems/assistance.  Space in sheds is at a premium(!) – Andrew Hughes and Matthew are busy working on potential show cattle.

Let’s hope spring is not far away and things pick up for the year …
