Monthly Diary – August 2019

SW Limousin Herd Competition

Boris and Ballinloan … what a shambles! Both giving me headaches but nothing I can do about either.

I started the month at Honiton Agricultural Show. Tremendous show of limousins of which I won a couple of classes. A credit to all that took part – Nick and Lisa Hill winning again, congrats.

I judged at North Devon Show – similar remarks – but congratulations to Tom Hilsdon.

Killerton Autumn Sunset

Harvest seemed to drag on and I was unable to cut anything for a fortnight during the month. But typically the weather improved over the bank holiday weekend and everything was caught up. Barley and wheat yields were very good, oats were below average. Prices have fallen like a stone, similarly the beef price doesn’t show any signs of improvement which is having a knock on effect on pedigree sales. Early decisions have to be made as to whether to keep or kill young bulls and heifers due to changing weight specifications.
