Monthly Diary – Jan/Feb 2013

At the end of January a selection of pedigree bulls and heifers were scanned by Signet for muscle/fat depth to enhance our recording figures.  I find this a useful exercise but am unsure if the additional expense is worthwhile.

One event which we all dread – the annual TB Test … We were delighted to pass the full herd TB test at the beginning of February – hopefully we will remain clear for another 12 months.  We regularly test the pedigree bulls every 60 days to ensure that they can be sold/moved without delay.

At the same time we carried out blood tests on all pedigree females and stock bulls for Johnes and BVD in the youngstock – This meant we avoided double handling.  All cows, bulls and young females were also vaccinated for Lepto and BVD.

The recent cold dry weather is an improvement – at last.
